Nationally, for every 1000 live births, almost 14 Black babies will die before their first birthday.  That's compared to 5.76 White babies.  In Virginia, the numbers mirror the national numbers, with Hampton Roads having the highest number of infant deaths.  On September 9, 2010 at 9P WHRO-TV will air a documentary called "Beyond Babyland" which examines infant mortality in the African American community of Memphis, Tennessee.  Then on Friday, September 10 at 9P, Another View will examine the same issue in the Black community of Hampton Roads.  Our guests include Nicole Rankins, M.D., Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynocology at EVMS, and Ms. Lilly Smith, Coordinator of the Loving Steps program in Norfolk.  Watch the documentary on Thursday and then join us Friday, September 10 at 9P on WHRO for Another View.

On the next Another View, a conversation on the history of civil rights in Virginia with Virginia State Senator Henry Marsh.  An attorney and civil rights activist, Senator Marsh fought massive resistance policy in Virginia schools, litigated cases against discrimination in employment, retention and promotion of African American teachers, and led the fight against race discrimination in employment.  In addition, Senator Marsh was elected the African American mayor of Richmond, and is considered one of the leading trial and appellate lawyers in Virginia.  Join us as we explore today's civil rights issues in the context of history, on the next Another View, Friday, September 3, 2010 at 9P on WHRO-TV, digital 15.1.

On the next Another View - tracing your roots!  Whether it's through the traditional way of oral history, or using new technology, understanding your family history is key to understanding yourself and your family today.  Poet, author and literary consultant Nathan M. Richardson will share how using the spoken word can help you trace your family tree.  Drusilla Pair also joins us - she's a genealogist, technologist and educator who will give instruction on techniques to trace your genealogy through public records, DNA testing and family documents.  It's all in the family on the next Another View, Friday, August 20 at 9P on WHRO-TV, digital 15.1.

Are you aware that one out of every 325 African Americans in Virginia lives with Sickle Cell Disease, with almost half right here in Hampton Roads?  It's an inherited disease that affects African Americans in much greater numbers than other races.  On the next Another View we'll learn about this disease - what it is, how it is treated, and what's being done to help make life easier while living with Sickle Cell.  You'll meet Shirley Taylor, a Social Worker with the Sickle Cell Association; Aegenis Whaley, who lives with the disease; Karen Wilson, a mother of two children with Sickle Cell; and Oncologist Dr. William Owen with CHKD who specializes in Sickle Cell Disease.  Plus, you'll meet some entrepreneurial high school students who help one local business "go green" while learning key project management skills in the process!  It's all on Another View, Friday, August 13 at 9P on WHRO-TV, digital 15.1.

The Another View Round Table is back - this time talking about politics and the media - from the Shirley Sherrod affair, to the ethics investigations of two prominent African American members of Congress.  It's never a dull moment when Roger Chesley, columnist for the Virginian-Pilot, community activist Bill Thomas, journalist and author Wil LaVeist, and Freddye Davy, director of the Honors College at Hampton University, get together to discuss the issues facing the African American community in Hampton Roads and beyond.  It's on the next Another View, Friday, August 6 at 9P on WHRO-TV, digital 15.1.
